I kind of love to have my hair touched — when my husband massages my scalp, that is. After all, he is used to all the hair weave around the house and the way it feels to touch my hair weave, which, as you can see in the above video, is more like “human hair” microbraided and sewn into my natural, unrelaxed hair.
But why don’t some black women want their hair touched?
Seriously, some black women have fabulous and pretty, natural in every sense of the word hair — be it flat ironed or curly.
Or some have relaxers and their hair looks fierce.
But when a black man (or any man, for that matter) goes to touch their hair, they back off. Like my sister-in-law, who has great hair with pretty blonde highlights and wears it natural for years now — with a nice flat-ironed look or her cute curly look — it always looks good. I love it. I envy her hair.
When her brother (my husband) tried to touch it, she backed off.
Or like Sanaa Lathan, when she was on Oprah, she talked about her “Something New” Australian costar (his name escapes me and I don’t feel like clicking over to search Google and IMDB at the moment) who went to touch her hair when she fell asleep on his shoulder on the airplane and she moved away.
Granted, he is married, but I don’t think that had much to do with it.
Perhaps she does have a weave (like in the movie) I don’t know, but her hair is gorgeous.
Yeah, I can understand why women with weaves like me don’t want guys grabbing all in our hair — like this one guy during a New Year’s Eve party did to a Puerto Rican women I know who has all natural and real virgin hair — and I thought: He can’t dig all in my hair like that if he’s never touched a weave!
Or her husband, a Mexican guy who hesitated to tell me about a black woman he dated and some hair weave horror story.
“Go ahead,” I urged him to tell me, after he stopped because maybe he thought I’d be embarrassed.
He then said how he was going to touch her hair and maybe some of her weave started coming out.
I know some men prefer real hair, but they are getting used to the weaves…
…because they are so popular, nearly everyone wears them.
I love wearing a weave — and even though the natural teeny weeny afro and locks and twists looks great on some, I like the length of hair and not having to go through the short phase of it all.
Yes, there are disadvantages to wearing weaves, but not many — and I like looking like a feminine girl!
That’s just me, and plenty of people. I want us all to wear our hair in ways that make us happy.

This newest video I recorded today was kind of healing for me, because it exposes my thin hair and I know it will help a lot of women who have experience hair loss:
Thin hair or hair loss is just not sexy, and therefore I stopped relaxing my hair and putting it in tight styles to try and save the hair that is on my head, as well as trying some products that will hopefully restore some of the thickness I used to enjoy.
My hair was so thick that a hairdresser called another over to look at it…
Hair weaves to cover hair loss and thin hair
…one time when I was in Chicago getting my usual touch-up relaxer, I confessed to the hair stylist that I had a bit of dermatitis or something that made my scalp a little itchy and red and irritated to the point that it would bleed sometimes.
I don’t know if that was eczema or what, and I still haven’t seen a dermatologist about my scalp all these years later, but thankfully the breakouts rarely happen anymore.
When I first noticed thinning hair…
…actually, now that I really think about it, my hair looked thin back in college in the back when a friend told me it looked thin.
I’d gotten into the bad habit in high school or earlier of not only relaxing my hair (my mom started us on the “kitty kit” perms — remember those? — after years spent in a hot kitchen pressing and curling our natural hair into submission) but I would also press my hair after having it relaxed at home sometimes because I felt that made it straighter.
Well, heck, that’s not so far away from what women do nowadays when you have your hair relaxed and then flat ironed with an iron so hot that it scorches it like I did my hair. Anyway, a friend commented that the back of my hair looked thin in college.
But I still kept getting it relaxed…
Letting the healthy natural hair under the weave grow stronger and longer...
…all through college (after all, that was the ’80s and the natural hair trend hadn’t come back in style like it is thankfully now) and well into the ’90s and beyond.
The only time I really took a break from my every 6 weeks or less often relaxer touch ups is perhaps around 2002, when I moved back to Ohio and started hanging around younger women who taught me all about getting braids and microbraids and weaves and stuff.
I remember sitting down in my living room and trying to put in my own microbraids because I wanted them so badly — ever since I saw this sister wearing blonde-ish microbraids in the ’90s when I worked in Chicago at LaSalle National Bank and Trust and I literally stared at her head they were so beautiful.
She gave me that knowing smile. I know she probably got a lot of appreciative stares back then. She was the first person I’d seen with hair like that. Maybe she’d actually gotten them done in Africa, like the descent of some of the women I’d later go to in Cleveland to get my hair braided.
Anyway…
My one friend had another friend do a pretty cornrow style with a curly fall in the back half of it that had combs to attach it into my real hair. I like the style and tried to duplicate it later, but seeing as though I’m not the best cornrower, at the roots toward my crown I ended them with those black rubber bands and it didn’t help my hair in that area.
After that, I’d get microbraids and went to Africa Euphoria in Shaker Heights, Ohio (near or in Cleveland?) and they charged $380 and were kind of rude and braided too tightly and you could tell they have a beef with black American women.
The women at one of those CJ salons around the same area were a bit nicer, but you could tell they had beef with African-American women as well, as they watched an African movie to pass the time and when a character started acting all slutty, they all laughed and said, “American…”
It was a trip being in a room full of black people all speaking French. They were from the Ivory Coast and one talked about being away from her son and seemed sad. So we all have something to learn from each other.
Back to the hair weaves…
I’ve tried plenty of different types of sew-ins and braided stuff with nets (which is another way to use hair weaves to cover hair loss, but I don’t like having my scalp covered to much because that’s just itchy) — stuff that might work well for other women, especially some I see with way more hair loss than me that snatch their hair back tightly into a big old ponytail that is way thicker and more lush and shinier and silkier than the thin hair they have that’s real.
We are all just trying to look our best and feel good however, so hopefully this site can help plenty of women.
I pretty much prefer to do my own hair these days, because at least I know it won’t be braided too tightly, and I know that I can take my time and experiment and do it the way I want it, and make it look more natural.
Yes, I was tempted to try the Outre Human Hair Weave Perfect Bob Quick Weave that looked so pretty on the model in the pic, but once I watched all those YouTube videos and saw just how covered up my scalp would be — and that I might have to give up the “non-invisible part” that I love (being able to show real hair in a part) then I thought again and didn’t get it.
Yeah, it could be nice for a special event, and hopefully I’d look fierce with that shorter cut, but for now the crazy curly sexy look is working for me and my workout schedule.
So I’ve tried the hair regrowth product shown in the video, as well as some masking techniques like sprays that seemingly dried out my hair, so the curling and weaving and not pressuring my hair too much is working better for me now.
And hopefully you too, if you try some of these tips.

I’m also taking estrogen now (years after having a hysterectomy at age 35), and perhaps that will help my hair in the meantime. I’m not giving up hope, and I thank God for the hair that I do have, which, by the way, I stopped relaxing maybe back in 2008 or so.
The last time I took all the weave out it was kind of freeing just to see how my hair looked, but I looked like my mom and didn’t like it and now I’m glad I haven’t relaxed it in years (still dye it though) and the thicker, nappier hair helps mask thin hair as well.

In the previous videos, I showed you how my “human hair” weave looked pretty much fresh out the shower, with a slight wave in it.
And I talked about how I like to curling it with that curling iron to make the hair look fuller and better. In the above video I used the Hot Tools curling iron while some of my hair was still damp, to give it that steamy sizzle that seems to “lock” the curl better in place when I just let it air dry.
In the next video, I will show you how it looks all curled all over my head, and how I use the curls to mask any thin hair or hair loss.

Natural hair is such a growing trend, with plenty of young black and African-American women choosing to forgo the “creamy crack” hair relaxer (okay, perm, as some of us still say) in order to put their natural black hair in styles like two-strand twists or bantu knots or a big ol’ ‘fro or plenty of other styles, including protective styles.
Well, with my hair being thinner than it was in my 20s when I wore perms (yes, relaxers…I know), I don’t rock the natural hair only style, and even if it was that thick again (I pray, I pray, please Lord Jesus, let it be again) I don’t know if I’d want to rock a short natural style.
I do like the longer twists and stuff, but for now I’m loving the curly weave of human hair (like) that I use, and since people asked me how I put it in, I knew it was finally time to create videos and a website around the topic.
